Lucy Tolan (she/her) is a queer ceramics artist based in Naarm. Having completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2018, she utilises a combination of pinch and slab-building techniques to negotiate concerns of tension and harmony within her pieces.Through bold juxtaposition of form, colour and texture, Tolan’s work catalyses the generative power of aesthetic contradiction. Her style draws from diverse sources of inspiration - including modernist architecture, textiles and the natural world – to produce romantic encounters between fragility and boldness within each creation.Tolan’s work has been exhibited by galleries such as Craft Victoria and Modern Times. She has been featured in The Design Files, and was chosen as one of Craft Victoria’s 2020 Virtual Makers in Residence. In 2021, she was selected as a finalist for the ‘Handcrafted’ Prize in the Design Files + Laminex Awards.

	Construct, Disrupt&#38;nbsp;
Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduation Show 2018 - RMIT
Construct, Disrupt examines the disruption architecture creates within the environment that surrounds it. I was interested in how the structure and surrounding terrain become unified, despite the juxtaposing materiality. I’ve created a tension between form and surface texture; smooth meets rough, oozing together. Meanwhile, soft, fluid fragments sit upon a hard, angular form. I’ve employed the aesthetic qualities of modernist and brutalist architecture for its bold, outspoken forms that are often set within immense landscapes.

	Resting Place

First Site Gallery, MelbourneA collaborative exhibition by Hedwig Crombie, Griselda Crombie and Lucy TolanOctober 30, 2018–November 9, 2018
The objects in Resting Place are derived from a shared time, place and memory. Using ceramics and gold and silversmithing, the artists have created a series of site referential works. These objects will capture the artist’s individual encounters, demonstrating how their experiences differ.The value of an object is subjective (determined by those who encounter it). They can have a direct relationship to memories, as mementos and souvenirs. We use them to recall details and feelings of a specific time and place. Resting Place brings their interest in memory and place together in a collaborative installation.

In ‘Seams’ Lucy Tolan’s bold, architectural forms investigate the construction and deconstruction of the vessel.&#38;nbsp;Presented online and in Craft’s Members’ Vitrine Gallery, this new body of work explores the textile qualities of clay and the convergence of material through accentuated joins. Representing the artist's ongoing interest in technique and form, pinching and coiling techniques are used to create preliminary vessels which are then cut apart and reassembled. By focusing on points of juncture, Tolan highlights the process of production and reveals the maker’s hand in each object’s history.&#38;nbsp;“The process and aesthetics I employ are informed by my curiosity and ongoing consideration of architecture and textiles”.&#38;nbsp;

November 19 – December 10 2020Talismans, Rafts, Mementos, showcases the work of the entire community of Modern Times artists – both new and old, emerging and established – with over 150 works by 57 artists that span painting, photography, ceramics and sculpture.Throughout 2020 artists used their practice to make sense of what was happening around them. Talismans, Rafts, Mementos celebrates this rich vein of creative output representing both the psychological and physical artefacts that have surfaced during this time.

From deep exploration of isolation, trauma and struggle to gentle musings on just having a slower pace of life and time to explore personal interests, the work in this exhibition reflects the spectrum of individual experience.“I once perceived that I knew what would occur next week, now I’m certain that every day is in flux.
